From C++ to Java - Summary of the Second Mentorship Edition
The second mentorship process as part of the 42 Warsaw initiative is officially wrapped up!
Over the past 3 months, I had the pleasure of supporting one of the students in his journey to break into the IT industry as a backend developer.
It was an incredibly intense and fruitful period, filled with hours of in-depth discussions, strategic planning, and engineering knowledge exchange.
Key Areas and Results of Our Collaboration:
- Java & Spring Boot Fundamentals: We thoroughly reviewed core Java concepts and the Spring Boot ecosystem from the ground up.
- Dedicated Roadmap 2.0: We built a personalized 6-month development roadmap tailored specifically to current market requirements for Junior Java Developer roles.
- Recruitment Simulation: We conducted a comprehensive mock technical interview to verify practical knowledge and tame recruitment stress.
- CV and LinkedIn Audit: We performed a complete audit of documents and online presence, focusing on highlighting unique advantages and tech positioning.
- Translating Experience (C++ to Java): We reframed a unique background in C++ and Shell into market benefits for Java backend development.
- Portfolio Project in Spring Boot: We designed the architecture for a solid application that will serve as the primary showcase on GitHub.
- Architecture & Clean Code: We covered REST API design, Clean Code principles, SOLID, and commercial coding standards.
- Application System: We implemented a structured process for tracking applications (using a dedicated spreadsheet) without waiting for a false sense of 100% readiness.
- Job Hunting Strategy: We developed an active-passive job search strategy leveraging networking and direct contact with recruiters.
- Recruitment Insights: I shared practical tips and best practices for navigating the current IT job market.
- Engineering Insights: I shared my personal developer experience and key lessons learned throughout my career path.
Summary and Next Steps
These were truly productive months! Huge thanks to my mentee for their commitment, consistency, and fantastic energy.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for their quick transition into their first job or internship in their dream tech field!
As for me, I am drawing valuable lessons from this process to support future students at 42 Warsaw even better. The next edition is coming soon!
