Working with DevExtreme and WCAG – Where UI Meets Accessibility

In recent weeks, I've been spending a lot of time with DevExtreme library components. However, my goal isn't just to make them 'work' — it's to ensure they comply with WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards.

Implementing fixes that have a real impact on:

  • Full readability and correct interpretation of the page structure by screen readers (NVDA, JAWS),
  • Intuitive navigation using only the keyboard (managing focus and tab order),
  • Ensuring proper contrast, clear interactive states, and correct visual hierarchy of elements,

And I'll say one thing: this is an incredibly interesting yet demanding engineering challenge.

  • On one hand: I have to dive deep under the hood of DevExtreme to understand the HTML code and attributes a given component generates in various states,
  • On the other hand: I look for creative solutions that meet strict accessibility standards without breaking the UI consistency or the application's complex business logic.

Working with screen readers has become a permanent part of my testing workflow.

It's a completely new perspective — when you start hearing the application instead of seeing it, you quickly catch navigation errors or unclear labels. It teaches great humility towards UX and forces you to think of every button as a critical interaction point.

The result of this work?

  • Deep learning of Accessibility (A11y) and UX: I'm learning how to design a DOM structure that is semantic and predictable for every user,
  • Expert DevExtreme Customization: Going beyond standard library settings to meet real user needs,
  • WCAG Standards Implementation: Building solutions that not only look good but actually meet accessibility standards, improving the overall quality and reach of the IT product.

Accessibility is not an 'add-on' to a project—it is a fundamental feature of good software. I'm glad I can grow in this area and create a web without barriers.
