From Basics to QA: Manual Tester Mentorship Process
I have concluded another intensive month of mentoring, focusing on a critical area of every IT project – Quality Assurance (QA).
Collaborating with an ambitious mentee taking steps in manual and automated testing was a great opportunity to exchange experiences at the intersection of development and quality.
A New Perspective on Quality Assurance
In this mentoring process, we focused on a unique approach: merging a developer's perspective with pure testing craftsmanship. As a developer, I view testing through the lens of delivering solid code and CI/CD processes. I wanted my mentee to gain this insight as well—to understand not just 'what' she is testing, but 'how' a given feature is built underneath.
To ensure the highest standard of support, I took an extra step: consulting on specific market aspects with experts from the testing industry. This allowed us to combine my architectural knowledge with their QA trend experience, creating a complete roadmap for the mentee.
Key Achievements and Goals:
- Professional Image: Preparing a professional CV focused on the Manual Tester / QA role.
- LinkedIn Authority: Profile optimization focused on showcasing project experience and industry certifications.
- Application Strategy: Developing a job search process and personalizing documents for specific job offers.
- Technical Roadmap: Building a development plan, including portfolio structure and the selection of first automation tools.
- Understanding SDLC: Substantive discussions on the tester's role in the software development life cycle and system architecture.
- Documentation & Processes: Developing skills in creating professional test plans and substantive bug reports.
- Competency Analysis: Identifying market niches and creating a plan for acquiring new technical knowledge in the coming months.
Technical Foundation in Testing
I used my experience in writing E2E tests and securing release processes to give this mentorship a strong technical foundation. We talked about how a tester can become a developer’s right hand, helping optimize CI/CD pipelines and ensuring quality at every stage of production.
This collaboration was an incredibly valuable experience for me, shedding new light on the quality assurance process from the perspective of someone who executes this process daily.
My mentee is a tester with great energy and a clear professional goal. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for her dynamic entry into the world of automation!
