Design Process in a Commercial Environment: UX Case Study

In recent months, I had the pleasure of leading a comprehensive mentoring process that went beyond the standard framework of learning. I supported an ambitious designer in her transition to a UI/UX Designer role.

Our collaboration was based on the role of a navigator—we focused on specific design challenges and skill development while working on a real product: my new business website.

Tailored Support (and Expert Consultations)

As a developer and consultant, I view design through the lens of implementation and usability. However, to give my mentee the broadest market perspective, I took an extra step—I consulted her progress and portfolio with friendly UI/UX Designers.

Thanks to these conversations, we were able to refine details that are crucial from a recruitment perspective in this specific industry. Combining my business perspective with technical tips from design practitioners gave us a powerful advantage.

Key Achievements and Milestones:

  • Junior Image: Preparing a professional CV tailored to the high visual standards of the UI/UX industry.
  • LinkedIn Outreach: Profile optimization for attracting headhunters and portfolio presentation.
  • Market Strategy: Developing an active job search plan and personalizing application processes.
  • Roadmap 2.0: Planning next steps, including personal projects and technical volunteering.
  • Commercial Project: Delivering a full design for my business website as real proof of skills.
  • Motivational Mentoring: Breaking self-presentation barriers and building confidence in a new professional role.
  • Portfolio Review: Developing a portfolio based on solid case studies, enhanced by professional feedback from Senior UI/UX Designers.
  • Networking & Feedback: Learning how to gather constructive criticism from the design community and using it for iterative project improvements.

Honesty in Mentorship: What's Next?

I believe a good mentor is one who knows when to pass the torch. That’s why, at the end of the process, I advised my mentee to find her next mentor—this time strictly from the design world.

While I helped her 'stand out' in the market, organize her strategy, and gain confidence, a dedicated design mentor will now help her reach a master level of UI craftsmanship. This honest approach to development prevents wandering and leads to success the fastest.

I am immensely impressed with the quality of the solutions delivered. The 'Win-Win' model, where the mentee gained a commercial project and I gained a modern design, worked perfectly.

The determination I observed during this collaboration is a guarantee of success. This was just the beginning of an exciting journey in the world of modern design!
